Mapping the Latest Depression

I’m a big fan of the mapping software now available as a tool for illustrating historical and demographic change. It is perpetually on my to do list to figure out how to use it effectively in our professional development workshops. Slate has a great, if sobering, example of its use, in this interactive recession map. What’s alarming is the illustration of what we know all too well: that the wheels have finally come off of the U.S. economy in just the past few months–this graphic is particularly good at illustrating just how precipitous the job loss has been (except for in Michigan, the canary in the economic coal mine).
